Only pre-owned (used) vehicles are eligible for the PG&E Pre-Owned EV Rebate. A vehicle is considered pre-owned (used) for the purposes of the Rebate if it meets both of the following criteria listed below:
- The vehicle has been fully registered to a previous owner prior to the Applicant’s purchase or lease; and
- If purchased at a dealership or retailer, the purchase or lease contract indicates that the vehicle is “Used” OR, if purchased in a private party sale, the Certificate of Title has a Transfer Date present.
Based on the above definition:
- Vehicles that are originally leased new by the applicant (or the applicant’s co-registered owner) and are subsequently purchased through a lease buy-out are still considered new for the purposes of the rebate and are ineligible.
- Salvaged vehicles are eligible if they were previously registered to a different owner and are now fully registered and operational. Salvaged vehicles that were not previously registered are considered new for the purposes of the rebate and are ineligible.
- Vehicles not previously fully registered by a prior owner and instead an unregistered dealer demo, rollback, or unwind, are still considered new for the purposes of the rebate and ineligible.
- Dealer demo vehicles that were previously registered to the dealership are considered pre-owned (used) for the purposes of the rebate and are eligible, so long as they meet all other program requirements.
If the vehicle’s status as pre-owned (used) is unclear within the required supporting documents, additional documentation may be required to confirm eligibility.
